Lautaro Martinez wins the Copa América for Argentina over Colombia in extra time.
Sunday night's extra-time goal by Lautaro Martinez won Argentina back-to-back Copa América crowns and a third straight major tournament success.
Martinez scored his sixth tournament goal in the 112th minute to beat Colombia 1-0 at Hard Rock Stadium. Martinez beat Camilo Vargas with a right-wing shot after breaking toward the Colombia goal.
After joining Argentina's triple substitution in the 97th minute, Martinez scored. He led Copa América scorers with five goals, three of which came as a replacement.
Argentina played nearly all the game without Lionel Messi due to the additional 30-minute session after a 0-0 regulation tie.
Messi left the game in the 65th minute after collapsing while chasing the ball. He seemed to know he was hurt immediately. The bench quickly recruited Nicolas Gonzalez as a replacement.
Messi hobbled off the pitch without a shoe on his right foot and collapsed to the bench. Soon after sitting down, he broke down in tears, possibly understanding that Sunday night's game could be his last major tournament performance for his country.
At the start of extra time, TV cameras zoomed in on Messi's ankle, highlighting its severity.
After Martinez scored, Angel Di Maria was substituted for Nicolas Otamendi in the 117th minute. Sunday was Di Maria's last game in an Argentina jersey, and he came off the pitch crying. After arriving to the Argentina bench, Di Maria hugged a smiling Messi.
